Sofia's Story

February 3, 2023

Sofia-WebsiteHaving grown up abroad, some people would think why come back to the UK?

Well, here is why…

… I studied Media Studies and Film Studies for GCSE and IB and knew I wanted to get into a career which would centre on creativity and original thinking.

In 2017, I secured my place at Coventry University and studied Advertising and Marketing where Covid postponed my graduation until 2021. During this time, I secured a 12-month placement at the University Hospital’s Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) were I was able to put my knowledge of marketing into practice as a Marketing Assistant, taking the lead on managing campaigns including their “72nd NHS birthday” campaign. To think this was my first national campaign!

Fast forward to 2022 and two Marketing roles later, I was soon-to-be unemployed and needed a new job to look forward too. That was when I came across We Are Digital on Indeed, where at the time they were looking for a Marketing Campaign Executive for one of their main projects – known to me now as the Department for Education’s Skills Bootcamps in Digital Marketing. I have always tried to implement the words of divine timing into my daily routines and at the time and position I was in, this seemed like one of those moments. Yet, I felt skeptical as to whether I was the right fit for this role but with family encouragement I went for it.

After two interviews and a task to complete I got the call from Rebecca that they wished to make me an offer on the role and it was very much a pinch me moment!

Almost a year later and completely emersed into the DfE project, I have helped to onboard more than 400 learners onto our Waves 2 and 3 through the campaigns and social media posts that I have created: with one of them achieving over 176 likes!

Aside from stats, working at We Are Digital and being assigned to this project has allowed me to learn so much and work with some truly incredible people. It is amazing how fellow staff members I work alongside have employment history at companies including JLR, Capita and United Nations - then there is me! I also feel very well respected at WAD too. My employment history might be short but I have found previously I was a small fish in a big pond but during my time at WAD I feel recognized as a bigger fish. I can’t forget about my fellow Marketing team either. Coming into a new business, is always daunting especially with not knowing anyone but I have never felt more welcomed or supported like I have since joining the company. Like a puzzle piece, I feel like I have fitted in the perfect spot and I look forward to growing within the company and creating a lot more social impact.
