5 ways to stay warm in Winter

October 2, 2025

UK winters bring chilly temperatures and high gas and electricity bills. But staying warm doesn't need to mean spending more. By making a few changes, you can keep cosy, save energy, and reduce your costs.

Here are practical tips to help you through the colder months:

1. Stop draughts

Prevent cold air from entering your home by sealing gaps around windows, doors, and other openings. Use draught excluders, door sweeps, or even rolled-up towels to block chilly breezes. Curtains or blinds can also help insulate windows.

2. Use heating efficiently

Set your thermostat wisely. Keep your thermostat at a comfortable but energy-saving temperature, such as 18-20°C. Lower the setting slightly when you’re asleep or out of the house.

You can also use timers which allow you to programme your heating system to turn on and off when required, ensuring warmth when it’s needed and stops you from wasting energy.

3. Maximise insulation

Check your loft and wall insulation. Proper insulation keeps heat from escaping and reduces the need to keep the heating on, therefore lowering your bills.

If you are renting, ensure to check insulation options with your landlord.

4. Dress for the weather indoors

Wear warm clothing, such as jumpers, thermal socks, and layered outfits, to help retain your body heat. Slippers and blankets can also make a big difference in keeping you comfortable without having to crank up the heating.

5. Check for support

If you’re struggling with energy costs, look into government schemes or grants that might assist with bills or home improvements, such as insulation upgrades.
