In the UK, to change your name, you will need a deed poll. This is a legal document which proves a change of name has occurred.

You can change any part of your name, add or remove names or hyphens, or change the spelling.

Who is the service for?

You may be eligible to use this free service if you:

  • Don't have regular access to a device or the internet

  • Don't feel confident completing online forms

Changing your name:

When changing your name, you must make sure it is:
  • Pronounceable

  • Doesn't include symbols, numbers or punctuation (unless it’s a hyphenated name or part of an established name like O’Hara)

  • Not offensive or against the public interest (for example, adding Ltd to the end of the name)

When a deed poll cannot be used:

You cannot use a deed poll when you want to change:
  • Which letters are capitalised within your name

  • Your titles, for example, Mr, Mrs, Sir, Lady or Doctor
