Building confidence and a career - read Garry's story

Garry had been unemployed for a while and was struggling to find a job. He knew the internet could help with employment but lacked the necessary digital skills to use it effectively. He felt overwhelmed and isolated in a digitally connected society, and he was starting to lose hope.

That's when his local Lloyds Bank branch referred Garry to the Digital Helpline. Here, he was connected to Madeline, a patient and dedicated digital inclusion trainer who was determined to help Garry unlock the power of the internet.

Madeline started by teaching Garry the basics of creating and sending a CV, as well as filling out online job applications. At first, Garry was nervous and lacked confidence in his abilities, but as he started to understand the concepts and master the skills, he became more confident in his abilities. Madeline's patience and encouragement helped him gain a sense of capability that he hadn't felt before.

Once Garry had mastered the basics, he was introduced to the broader capabilities of the internet. He was shown how to use search engines like Google for trip planning, information retrieval, and other everyday tasks. This opened Garry's eyes to the potential of the web as a powerful tool that could help simplify his life.

Garry quickly started to gain an understanding of how technology could be used to improve his life. He was able to create an online presence through his CV and other job applications, making his hunt for a job easier and less overwhelming. As well as this, Garry was able to utilise the internet for everyday tasks like booking tickets and researching information that would help enhance his knowledge in a competitive job market.

Garry's digital learning journey made him realise that digital skills are essential in today's job market. With the right help, he was able to gain the knowledge and confidence needed to find employment and lead a more connected life. He now feels empowered to take advantage of all that technology can offer him, both in terms of finding a job and living a more fulfilling life.
