Digital technologies are increasingly becoming a central part of peoples’ lives, reshaping the way we live, work, and play and creating new opportunities for social and economic development.

However, the shift towards an increasingly digital world can widen the digital divide further between those able to benefit from digital advancements and those that are not – either because they are in socially and economically disadvantaged sectors of the population or in areas without access to digital technologies, services, and opportunities.

Digital access is more important now than ever, millions of people are digitally excluded, and it is an issue that affects many different people.

11.9 million people do not have the Essential Digital Skills needed for day-to-day life in the UK.

1.9 million households in the UK lack any kind of internet access.

9 million people struggle to use the internet independently.

Digital Inclusion is all about enabling digital access and providing tailored support to help people overcome their own barriers; whether that’s around access, cost, confidence, or skills.

Here are five key ingredients that enable digital access:

  1. Knowledge – access to information and support available.
  2. Skills Training – tailored education, that allows an individual to upskill
  3. Access to a device – being able to access equipment to get online, such as a computer, tablet, or smartphone.
  4. Building confidence – so an individual can access the internet and complete tasks online by themselves.
  5. Access to free wi-fi – this can be crucial for people who might find it difficult to afford data costs on their digital devices.

For millions of people lack of digital access can result in hardship and lost opportunities and we believe in bringing together education and technology to create opportunities and a future.
